The tubing and donor car are a dead giveaway.....
C'mon Don......give us a Landspeeder!!!

I couldn't think of the name (not a star wars fanatic), but that was my guess too.

Hey you guys are good...nothin' slips by you., yup emt tubing is great for these kind of low buck projects,
|

Well the Stormtrooper helmet helped...
|
And I knew it wasn't enought tubing for a skyhopper!

I assume there's no way to make a landspeeder street legal, if that's true then do you have to make the 2 side engines detachable to fit on a trailer
without hanging way off each side when transporting?
Sure would be cool to drive one through the parade on 4th of July here! |
|||

Street legal... | ||
|
I don't see why it can't be street legal..a windshield, headlights, signal, a wiper etc..I intend to drive it...you know for those trips to the corner
store..haha...ohh and those side engine pods, maybe I could just call them enlarged wheel arches..

Don, your metal work is always top notch. Keep on rocking!

now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout....steel fab.....we need more Bats to start coming out this way too!
What thickness are you using? Hard to tell in the pic, but one of the inner grill edges looks like you have a decent thickness....probably a good idea for a Landspeeder since there are no bumpers!! |

Thanx Guys! | ||
|
Thats 20 gauge mild steel Dan, the entire speeder is being built with 20 and 22 gauge...no fiberglass at all with maybe the exception of the jet pods
only if they prove to be too time consuming in steel. I intend to put working 'mini' doors in that swing up like a countach 'cause getting in and dropping down into a fiero is difficult enough as it is. For laughs I'd like make an steel R2 too welded to the rear trunk hatch with a viking helmut on it.

That just really looks like FUN project, ya know I bet you could pre-cut and roll the metal sections and bar stock and sell a "Landieo"
(Landspeeder-Fiero name smash) kit for home builders to make their own Landspeeders!
I mean the prefab on the metal wouldn't likely be all that bad if you were making say 10-20 kits all at once (set up one time and run 10-20 parts saving costs and time), not sure what you'll end up with for engine pods and windshield but think how affordable (compared to a Bat) the raw parts would be for a home builder, he just buys a crappy Fiero, buys your metal sections and whatnot, and does the kit bash at home and has it painted! Pretty low tech build overall, costs should be reasonable which means more folks might want one.........well anyway, just tossing it out there for the heck of it, I am probably way off base, just got excited since it should be a LOT cheaper than a Bat!
(and I still need to build a Bat before I build a speeder!) |

66BAT,
Yeah, it sounds like he could, if he could get a good cheap source of atomic rocket engines.

Bring on the clones... | ||
|
You made several good points 66Bat, I just don't think there's much of a market...30 years since star wars and we have one maybe 2 replicas in
existance...far smaller than the Bat replica demand.... I wouldnt want to make clones in steel kits though..maybe fiberglass, next up will be grafting the
'glass clone to a small boat.

Just batty | ||

I believe just about every person on this board is out of the ordinary,and driving a landspeeder is right up our alley. So far the police have been cool about
seeing the 66 on the street and I just hope they will be just as cool to see my 89 on the prowl, A landspeeder will be out of this world lets see what happens.
So Don I say to you build it and we will buy!!!!!!!!!

It's been a long time, but when you consider how die-hard trekkies and star wars fans are, it's probably about the right time for the market for real
big star wars stuff to start appearing. All those kids are just reaching the age where the more wealthy ones might be able to consider these kinds of things.
Don, your level of devotion to making truly street worthy and durable replicas will be something some of these mid-life crisis rich guys will pay for. It may not be a tremendous market, but I wouldn't be surprised if some people show interest. |

Death Star or Bust...preferably Pamela's.....haha
|
Thanx guys...Ohh I'll build it alright..whether or not I market the Landiero
(lol..thanx Dan) will be another story. There's copyright and trademarket issues to contend with not to mention those splash molders in
Florida who I know would just lov to get their hands on it. One thing I know for sure it'll be MUCH quicker and easier to build than building an 89 Bat to
perfection...(never again) you sure you know what your getting into MM?
