Hi Eric,
I wish I could say yes but my wife found these! When you brought this topic up and A.Pennyworth posted photos of old lamps is when it really dawned on me. I've been Google-ing old studio lighting ever since! Another favorite set of key words is "spun aluminum". Some nice shapes out there but the cut outs would have to be added. Chuck... |

Eric,
Why not take a shot and take a photo of said beacon cage and ask them? If they don't know a day digging around in the bins might be worth while. Re: Beacon cage? | ||

While discussing the beacon cage above, it has been thought maybe it came off of something else and was used over the Batmobile's revolving red light beacon. Let's think about that revolving light for a change. There were many brands in the 1960's, several named are Federal, Federal-Ray, Federal Sign and Signal Corp., Mars, Sireno, Signal Stat, Electraray, Dietz and Tripp Lite.
What I noticed in these B/W shot of the vintage #1, was that on top there are 3 circular areas, 2 smaller (raised) and a larger centered circular area. These are inclosed inside a color change (density/thickness?) larger circular area. By chance I saw this old ebay auction for a red TRIPP LITE rotating beacon. Compare the configuration of the center of the top of this light to that of the Batmobile's light. (and also the slope angle of it's top edge) Since this was an ended auction I contacted the winning bidder and offered a fair purchase price above his bid and he wanted to keep it. I also asked for some exacting specs and additional pictures (I even offered some funds for his time and effort) but he never replied, however the auction text stated "It is 7 1/4" tall and 6" round. The metal plate is: Made By Tripp Lite A Division of tripp Mfg. Co. Chicago 6, Illinois. Model MV 2, Volts 12"
Now another question to be answered is, was this cage made specifically for the Batmobile's light during the Batmobile construction time frame, formed around a bare "TRIPP LITE" MV2 (or other), or perhaps this combo unit was found already together, build by someone else prior and then just used on the Batmobile? |

Fantastic work, as always, John. I think your assessment is right on the money.
I use the Tri-Lite lights in our beacons because they are the closest I could find. |

Nice detective work AP. I think you may have something there.
I have been thinking it was a cage built specifically for that beacon light back in the day. I've imagined the light & cage being mounted to a wall or ceiling and used at a nuclear powerplant or some underground (007/Bond) top secret government test area. |

Re: Beacon cage? | ||

I just talked with George today and asked him specifically about the cage and light. He remembered quite well that he made it from scratch and the detail that went into it. He mentioned they built it around an existing emergency light. He thought the top of the cage was built using a "pot" or a "dish" and he totally remembered the details that went into it.
George acknowledged the replica beacon lights and cages were a different shape than the #1. He said, the main reason was to save time and money--it was a much simpler design (the cages). Jeez could this have been the original cage!?

Well there you have it!
I can stop Google-ing now! THANK YOU,THANK YOU! Sweet! Thanks for the info Eric. This implies that at least some of the parts were found and not completly custom made. I do agree that the openings were probably custom cut but on an existing shape.Add the ribs and a bottom flange and the beacon is born! I see the top portion as one unit rather than a ring/flange around a central cone shape.The angle of the beacon above the "flange" looks a tiny bit different than the main body between the slats to me. That "top hat" shape could be the plate or pot George spoke of.It would be a matter of cutting the bottom out to the diameter of the lamp glass. In my Google-ing I've seen plenty of aluminum shapes that resemble the main body.Lampshades, trashcans and ice buckets. With good measurements it could be narrowed even more. And thanks to A. Pennyworth for once again tracking down some great information about the base light. With these ballpark numbers I might just have to cobble one together. Thanks again Guys! Chuck... |

Awesome gentlemen!!!
Now we can narrow down the estimates and get pretty close to the long gone original. I'm also impressed that (George says) they fabricated this wonderful piece. If the beacon is 7 1/4" high, then I kind of agree that the cage height is close to 6 5/8". Using this assumption, I think we can scale the other dimensions. Can the people that posted the beacon dimensions listed above please chime in with how they derived those numbers??? Also, would any of you like to revise your posted numbers based on the latest information? |

Re: Beacon cage? | ||

Thanks again to John for the investigative work! I have had numerous conversations with Dennis and Mark on this and I always believed it was custom made. I was pretty sure that the actual beacon top exited the cage and wasn't a cap as in most replicas.
To find an item that fit exactly would be almost impossible and if you did why wouldn't you have bought more knowing that the contract asked for more than one car? I've always wondered why George didn't make more that one when he created the first. Andy |

Custom made more likely from a pattern no doubt!
