My name is Paul and I live just Northwest of Toronto Canada. I ordered my kit from Bob Johnson a while ago and received it before Christmas. I started tearing down my 77 Town Car in January and fortunately found this board shortly there after. I received no instructions from Bob J until recently and that was a blessing in disguise. (no knock against Bob....he's a great guy) The point I want to make, is that most of my build knowledge has come from the postings on this board! And while the so called "flame wars" turned me off, I learned from those as well. In the end, I went through the "construction info package" Bob sent and am happy to report that all the instruction a builder needs to build a quality 66 is right here under our nose! I regret that I did not have the insight to look into other bodies (such as Don Currie's and others), but I'm sure I can make this work fine. I've already found a number of disappointments in the body construction and relayed the problems back to Bob so he can improve his product (not to complain). So far, I'm extremely pleased with my progress and look forward to sharing the first pics of "OUR" new 66 real soon.... I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with results of the Board's mentoring.(Thanks for the wonderful venue Eric) Stay tuned and thanks again for sharing your trials and tribulations! Same donor car color too! Going to take some work to straighten out the side flares and waves. How far along is yours now? Main differences: I did not glass in tubing on an upside down shell I made custom rocker panels (I will not overlap the body on a perfectly straight rocker) Using as much of the Lincoln Chasis as possible. Using Morgans's Lincoln Hinge suggestion Some unique framing design. The fun has started.......... Behind the Bat is a '56 T-Bird with Body off restoration in the works (Body ready for paint) Now that my Batmobile has started, some of the projects will be on hold. Rocker panels treated with POR 15 Inside... My Dad (76 years old, still works as a mechanic Monday thru Friday at our Truck Terminal Maintenance Shop and Saturday/Sunday at my Home Shop)!!! I'm NOT kidding! More to follow.....

I like the added metal rockers, I also did that on my current build while 'tidying' up the Lincoln floorpan with new steel mini tubs to follow. You may want to make allowances in the rear deck now for your future seat travel. Great to see there's another Canuck in the bat world. I think that makes 6 of us. DonC

I would love to see one of your new kits one day in person. Judging from the pics, it looks awesome! Crating would have be appreciated when my body was picked up, but it arrived upside down on the trailer floor with no packaging protection whatsoever (that was the first disappointment). Thanks for the heads up on the deck recess. I actually think I've measured for that; you can't see it in the pics because I still need to build the ends (door striker post area) out about 3 1/2" on each side. With this measurement/recess of the seat position, the leg room seems HUGE to me. Being 5'9" tall, Morgan and I joked about possibly adding wooden blocks to the pedals just in case!?! Either way, I'll need to confirm the seat travel and leg room once I get the seats mounted. Good thing we "tack weld" until we test-fit EVERYTHING. My build won't be a purist attempt and will deviate to cater to my personal preferences and practicality. I'll do my best to post these deviations in the months ahead on this ("sounding") board. I was going to use the Lincoln hinges also , but could not get the door to open more then 30". Since then I learned to put the hinge pin as close to the door edge as you can (opens into the fender) The lincoln parts will work just fine. Just wondering how many times did you have the body on and off? On my build I have the body mounted and the hood and doors hinged. heres a picture of the driver side door all glassed up.

I deleted some pics by error, I'll post old and new in next few posts... Radiator support has a steel channel on bottom where radiator rests on rubber. 4 bolts also fasten through shock rubber bushings to help combat vibration. Piano hinge (once upper framing is attached to hood) can be unbolted for hood service. I plan to add 2 linear power actuators to open and close.

I used the inner door shell to mock up the door opening for clearance. Front nose section was about an inch shorter on left side. I will be removing the section (ahead of light openings) and re-grafting onto the body. I think it's interesting that I caught this because I did not glass in my hood reinforcement frame before I was certain that the hood would operate to my satisfaction. I built the hood frame/radiator support square to the chasis in order to ensure the hood would open squarely in any event. When I put the body back down, the leading hood edge was way off and led me to check the nose alignment. I think this was an assembly problem and not necessarily a common problem with these molds. Guys with this kit should check this area nonetheless. Bob Johnson is aware of my problem and will advise mold maker to correct in future.

Posts: 528 (02/27/07 12:22 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Rear deck framing will accomodate seat back recess and 2 (household) access doors to storage compartment which will be fitted with handles (probably same as roll top handles). Because I have incorporated the Lincoln door hinges (inverted for better fit on my car) the inner door panels will need to be shortened and modified. I like the detail in these doors frames because they will accomodate a factory looking door weatherstrip in conjunction with the steel rocker profile. Rocker panel profile was designed similar to original, with a couple of tweeked changes. They add 3 inches of width to each side. Door opening area will be for later.

Hey John, I'll bet it's been up and down 30 times already! Trunk area will focus on using as much of Lincoln sheetmetal as possible (less the rust). Gas tank will have new filler neck retrofitted to fill near rear of trunk compartment. Guess we'll need some seperate ventng from the turbine system huh? Double linear actuators will perform the open and close functions. Okay, I think I'm up to date.... Holy keystroked! Paul

What was that? I made the Lincoln hinges work? Hardly!..... you're the guy that made them work! I just copied.... (and bugged you about it) If you'll look closely I did make a slight change.... I had to rotate one of the hinges on each side to give me 17" max height between the most lowest bolt hole and top one. (I'm pretty sure you anticipated this) I also switched the sides (the door sections from the Lincoln). By turning them upside down and switching sides, they seem to fit better to the outer door skin that way. As you know, the doors are FAR from finished! Can't wait for the dash frame so I can finish the reinforcing and hinge pillars in that area. I hope you can tell how much you've helped me with this. Thanks again, Paul

I will also glass in after this bond where extra strength and appearance as necessary. I thought it was a good alternative to glassing in a "tub" (the upside down body) or overhead for that matter. Got to properly prep the fibreglass and steel, but I sense you agree? It's expensive, but has it's advantage in certain applications like this. .....and I wouldn't dream of using anything else to bond that beautifully prepainted kit of yours!!!!! Paul

I also like seeing the sturdy a and b pillars that you have welded in place. Keep up the great work! A sidenote: We cut the original Lincoln trunk completely out of the car and build our own. We leave the floor out until the very last minute so we have greater access to the rear windshield lip, the triple rocket tube holes, and the sides of the trunk.
