in a way, it's amazing it's in decent shape all things considered. It's overall age, use as a prop and so on.

So Cal no rust | ||
|
Good points 66 although I doubt the rust on the Futura in that shot was from sitting in Southern California, no doubt it was sitting on the east coast for a
period of time after it's NY debut with probably no undercoating of any kind on it. Cars I've bought in So Cal just 30 miles inland from the ocean
(like Barris' shop) that have sat for decades never rusted at all even without undercoating.

In Ghia's memory | ||
|
Amongst all the tacky add ons and excessive carpet one can still see the small specialty brackets and metal pieces Ghia/Ford made like the front wheelwell
splash pan and rocker panel stabilizers. Interesting how the lower rocker squares off at the bottom and is several inches away from the frame rail. Now why the
exhaust tube behind the tire...clearance issues? Mark did you get a look under the roll dash and see if they used stick tape to hold it together?

#1 Edsel Steering Wheel
|
Here's a pic of the #1 Edsel steering wheel as of 2004. It hasn't changed, though:

does anyone know | ||
|
why the futura wheel was changed out in the 1st place ?
|

Mark Racop |
Steering Wheel Change | ||
|
Legend has it that Adam and Hubie (Adam's stunt double) constantly complained about the missing section of the wheel from 10 to 2, and that the Greenway
asked Barris to change the wheel to make it a full circle. At the beginning of third season he made the change, using an Edsel wheel for that replacement.
Years after the series was cancelled, Barris cut the Edsel wheel at 10 and 2 to match the cuts he made to the Futura wheel.

kinda makes sense | ||

to bad the futura wheel is among the missing... thanx Mark

I'd imagine that without power steering the futura would have been a beast that was more sailed than driven, hence the complaints from Hubie and Adam. Yep
that's the wheel it had when I sat in it in '87. In Eric's pic in the #1 I thought the wheel looked different and was curious if GB had made
another mod. I followed those links on the RTTBC but photobucket seems to be having problems ATM, and the other threads just left me with more questions (as
usual). I have watched the DVD of RTTBC and knew it wasn't the #1, but it looked damned nice! Curious the RTTBC car appears to have more screen accurate
antlers. Any ideas when Bob Butts built this car? Was it for Barris specifically or when did GB acquire it? Loving the brains trust on this board!

Just Curious.... | ||

Hey Mark,
As you know, I have a measurement "wish list" and I'm wondering if you have one tiny measurement present for me this year??? ....did you measure the width of the arch under the Beacon?
Come on...... I've been good this year! LOL I would love to make the trip out to Barris' shop, but can't do it this year, but if you lucky dogs don't mind helping out a fellow Board member.... that one measurement would mean a lot to me! Thanks. |
|||
Mark Racop |
Ooooo! Didn't think of that one
|
Sorry, Paul--with all the changes to the arch, beacon and antlers, I didn't even think of taking much video or photos, let alone measurements of the
arch...
I'll do some checking with others and get back with you asap, though. |

I was reminded of how much rear windshield lip shows behind the windshield (and even beyond the recently added chrome molding), and the distance between the
windshield lip and the trunk leading edge:
And for those wanting to open up their trunk lid chevrons:
It was heartbreaking to see the number of screws used to hold the driver door kick panel in place:
The beak and nose both need some attention:
And, yep, the nostril opening goes directly into...the vertical Futura hood support!
And this is how the trunk hinge attaches to the trunk lid:
Take care, all!

Nice job !! | ||

Thanks for the documenting photos, I do not think we have had such detail good and bad shown before. It also gives me an idea/proposal topic to be posted in a
new thread

#1 Stuff....... | ||
|
I kind of dig that lower door moulding.
I'm not sure how to add that to the fiberglass door shell on mine, but I think it's a more finished look. It's too bad that over the years some those 1-off items were ruined. If someone took on a proper resto of the #1 at least these would be easy enough to reproduce. |
