The windshields are being replaced by a gentleman that Barris hired to professionally fix the damaged models.

Embarrasment of riches... | ||
|
Well, after spending a chunk of that day with Scott Sebring, Mark Racop and a few of his actor friends later in the day (and stopping at the mcdonalds across
the street from Barris' shop) I am sorry I had to work that day and make TV! I would have loved to have been there. So at least we have the Feb date to
relive it! JUST ONE of these photos would have made all the old board members flip, and rework their cars, I am just in bat overload looking at all 11 pages
of info, photos etc. (Sure would have loved to have those temp control photos back then, I would have added that detail. but believe it or not, newbies
(those that joined after the early 90's!) we had NO shot of that side of the dash, and then some futura dash photos showed up, (those black and whites with
the steering wheel in clay etc.) was the first clear shot of the dash we had ever seen!
The other cocept car in the futura photo was called the "Beldone" when it ws in the movie with jerry lewis, funny scene if you haven't seen it, jerry gets attacked by the car. As the Futura was rusted from it's years of sitting at Barris' shop out in the open, then not tended to in the three weeks it was turned into the bat, a lot of that rust probably dates back to before it was the bat. Even with all of these photos, there are nooks i want to explore still. Interesting stuff! George has always been very open with his shop, and we should count our blessings because not everyone is anywhere NEAR as nice to "fanboys" like us! there is no question that he still has the #1! Don C. Kevin, Jack, Eric Sharp and Setzter, you all need to be at the get together! this is the ONE trip to "Mecca" I will bring a box of batmobile shirts at a special one time price!
Get them now, or never! As for what happened to the concept cars, there are a small handfull of wealthy collectors that now have many of the famous survivors of that era of concept cars. http://query.nytimes.com/...A9629C8B63&sec=travel http://www.automotivehist...online.com/GMconcepts.htm some of my favorites http://setiathome.berkele...forum_thread.php?id=39904 bet there is at least ONE conecept car you haven't seen on this page... But I can't find what I was looking for, a guy who had posted photos of his conept car collection, including a huge two part "safety car" that came apart, he had a barn full of concepts he had collected. I have stored everything in a big place called the "internet" and it's as easy to find as the ark of the covenant. I know it's in here somewhere. thanks for taking the time to come to my "cave" Mark, and it was great swapping stories. |

Did anyone take any photos of the compass while they were there? I need to see exactly how the "N" and the "E" are shaped for a new part
I'm making for the 1/18 Mattel model.
Thanks! |

Yup! | ||

If you go back through this thread, you'll see a closeup of the compass on the dashtop.

Mark,
Thanks. I saw that one earlier, but it still doesn't show in good enough detail the "N" and the "E". What I did do is look at other photos you lucky gentleman took that day of other dash labels and used them in conjunction with period photos of the Futura to try to make my best guess of the compass markings. Here is a composite I put together, where I circled certain letters, that seem to have a common font style(the whole dash layout uses the same basic font style). You can see the numbers on the steering wheel have been elongated to fit that space , just as the major compass points have been stretched to work on the compass (see how the "S" on the compass matches the font of the "2"'s and "5"'s on the steering wheel). The only "odd" things is that on the heating controls, the "N" is a different type than on the compass (see how the compass "N" is shaped like the "M"'s and "W"'s on the other dash labels). Unfortunately, this is the only decent photo I've found showing the "N" on the compass. Even though your photo that day is a good photo of the compass, it not as good (or from different angles) as you need to really see the font sharply. I know you going up again soon, but my decals are ready to print right now. If anyone of you have photos that you haven't posted yet, maybe there is still chance of clarifying these details.
I really do appreciate your help, just sometimes more intricate details are helpful. Of course when the decal is printed to 1/18 scale, it not going to be that obvious to others, but I just know I have the ability to make it right, just not the information. Thanks again!

Great research--I hadn't realized the focus of your search. Sorry about that! Good job. I didn't take any pictures from another angle last
month, but I'll dig through the archives.
