Before it died a lonely death. What about the availability of a "prop" Batmobile? No engine, etc., just the finished fiberglass body mounted on a steel frame with wheels. The interior complete of course. AP's post about the replica used on set made me think that it may have been a good idea to have something like that on the show. Then I wanted one!! Pro's and Con's anyone? Chuck...

Posts: 2711 (12/17/08 9:02 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I think Don C was the most recent builder to make a "roller" for his new GEN kit, and if memory serves the guy who eventually bought it is now making it a driver as mentioned in the previous post. If you just wanted a prop all you'd need is the body and trim, you could weld square tubing to create a simple and cheap "prop frame/chassis" to support the body and 4 tires...nothing you'd ever drive, just a cheap way to make it look complete. Still though, even that, with paint and all probably would set you back $10K or so, that might be better spent on getting a real bat mounted and started until you get more $$ the next year to do more work on it and so on!

Is it for weight? Or is it for the hope of cost savings? If the purpose is the alleviate weight to perhaps suspend the car at a Planet Hollywood, then by all means--go for it. If the goal is to hopefully save some money, I'm afraid it won't help much. The savings of making the car a prop instead of a driver are negligible. The surface of the body, the attention to detail, and the entire interior would/should all be the same--and that is where the expense lies in building a Bat. Less than $2,000 can make an old engine run very, very well. But a great paint job can cost $10-20k.

Not so much just the weight but ability to put it anywhere without leaks or "guano" from having a car parked in an interior space. Also, just wondering if it would save any serious money and still have the lines of the car to stare at and detail the interior as a hobby. I knew that the finish would be where the bulk of the cost would be. Frankly, you couldn't pay me enough to block sand a car that size! If the overall savings is only a few thousand then I suppose it makes sense to go all out and have a driver car. Thanks again Guys for letting me ponder this outloud with the Pro's! Got to start collecting pop bottles now. Hey John, I'll be sure to let you know the next time we have a cowl available. Posts: 1081 (12/19/08 12:38 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I did make a 'roller' with my new Gen 3 kit strictly for fun on a basic tube chassis ( see my Slambat column) and it was well worth it in my opinion for the purpose it was built for and I'll do it again if I have the time. It went to NJ and is not the car Zachman is building. I do offer a 'turnkey minus' roller at the minimal cost of $35k with my all new state of the art tube chassis, fully painted bodyshell and most accessories..probably the closest thing as to what's mentioned above and great for the entry level Bat enthusiast...add your drivetrain and interior and your off to the races! Posts: 2719 (12/19/08 6:57 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Years ago there was the "side" of a Batmobile offered for sale to hang on your wall, from a full size bat mold and painted etc., but even that with purchase price and shipping costs was too spendy (for us average Bat-geeks) and I would personally have invested in a real builder then too. It would be cool though if the various 1:1 builders here could somehow pull a mold of some interesting section of the car as a wall mount art piece, lay it up in black gelcoat and then offer it afforable 'as is" (if possible to be affordable--doubt it though) and then if it WAS cheap enough for most of us to buy, we could apply the red stripes and bat logos in adheasive form, or take it to a pinstriper later to have done. Wouldn't be a showcar job, but saves the $10K paint cost and still looks cool! Just a wild thought! (I found a pic of that side piece, didn't think I still had it!)
