They just don't look quite right I guess, but again I am no expert on 89's and I don't study them. Lower bodyand big tires sounds like it should look good.
Just out of curiosity is anybody calling for a Tumbler yet??

Re: DAY 1 >>> 89' BAT | ||

That'll be cool if you can get the car body lower as you noted (prior to the Nodeman post above), to date all the 89 replica's I have seen seem to have
too much opening around the wheels or/and too small of wheel diameter and width, or some combination of both.
They just don't look quite right I guess, but again I am no expert on 89's and I don't study them. Lower bodyand big tires sounds like it should look good. Just out of curiosity is anybody calling for a Tumbler yet?? |

Bumbler... | ||
|
Your right Dan per wheel arch/ wheel combo- too small or too big for the wheel opening not to mention tires up front clearing the body due the lower wheel
arch 'curl ins' at the bottom of the wheel arch which is why most run a smaller tire. Those goofy curl in areas while they may look good on a static
display car they simply get in the way in the real world...hence you'll generally see a smaller tire up front on replicas just to clear that area...except
on mine as I've 'corrected' that problem. The rear wheel arch has the same effect but if you choose your wheel tire combo just right it's not
an issue. Both my front and rear tire combo's sit just approx an inch or below the wheel lip (as I'll show in upcoming pics) and fill the wheelwells
perfectly.
As for the Bumbler no I won't be building that, in my opinion it exceeds the limits on good taste and falls in the category of a cartoon car that's gone through the shedder. |

Toflip or not to flip...
|
As my ongoing study of the 89 movie car continues I've come to the conclusion the front end never flipped up,

Re: DAY 1 >>> 89' BAT | ||

I couldn't say either way what they did for the movie cars but I would easily agree that making the front clip quickly removable would be MUCH more
practical and likely for a movie car/prop than going through all the trouble of making a flip front end.
It's all business on movie cars, no time or budget for fancy stuff! Plus most get damaged more than once in filming so you need fast change over and repair. Tumbler--I pretty much agree---hated it prior to it's movie debut, then thought it actually made sense in the context of the movie because it did look military which it was originally designed for. So then I liked it for the story line of the movie. But have zero desire to own/drive/replicate one. I barely even brought myself to buy a 1:64 version but figured I should just to add to my collection....it was just a few bucks anyways! But, I never thought people would want a replica 89 Batmobile either, and if they did, I never thought you could make one drivable or street legal so what would be the point right? Looks like I was wrong about that too!! ![]()

well i dont know for sure about others..but mine runs the same tires as the movie car...also the old youtube videos of my car was before it had mufflers and
stuff..its done now.and i could let it set even lower but i have it where if a bag blows or air compressor goes out it will still drive... but a group of guys
came shot alot of video for a fan film..the teaser should be out soon...but it will have the 89 in action car chase and all...

Stealth like.... | ||
|
Thanx Falcon!
After a couple coats of Bat Epoxy Black the build takes on a Stealth like appearance, all weld joints have been seam sealed and the floorpan underneath epoxied and undercoated. Whether this Bat see any rough weather or not at least it'll be ready for it.

Rad Plumbed...but not Bob'd :)
|
Plumbing the radiator in my 89 build with 'hard line' steel tubing was super easy.
With steel elbows left over from some unused headers and about 10 feet of round tube I tacked it all together and now will finish weld it and either paint it or plate it plus add a few brackets to secure it to the frame. Over all it didn't take a lot of time nor money....just some thought!

Tubbs 101 cont'd... | ||
|
Both wheel tubbs require a custom set of inner and outer flanges. I made two pair of these curved wheel flanges with a standing flange to be spot welded to the
inner wheelhouse and bonded to the outer wheel lip once the body is fitted on then the exact width of the wheel tubb will be made.

Looking good Don! | ||

Hi Don,
Nice work. Looks like you're getting the hang of that metal shrinker and stretcher (handy little thing). I like the rad pipes as well. Will you bead the ends for a more secure hose fastening? Good stuff... thanks for the peeks! |

Experience counts... | ||
|
Thanx Paul:)
ya I like to think as we get older ...we get wiser and and use better tools to make the job easier instead of beating metal over a post or pole until our hands are black and blue...haha...just like these new cast headers I just bought for the Big Bat...why spend hours making those previous headers fit when these will probably breathe almost as good and look way better...
and yes...I will bead those rad pipes, not to mention put a big heat shield under the rad and possibly extra rads out back just in case.

One eighteenth...??? | ||
|
My two 1/18 Bats side by side sure aren't to scale when compared to my fullsize builds..
The 66 model is longer and noticeably wider than the 89 model where as in full scale it's the opposite with the 89 being at 19'6.

Scale | ||

Looking great, Don!
The 1/18 scale 66 really turns out to be about 1/20.2 scale, so that probably doesn't help. ;) |

Let's put a Top on it! | ||
|
I spent a couple days hammerforming the 89 canopy out of 20 gauge mild steel the old fashioned way...with a mallet over a stump and then smoothed the lumps out
on my english wheel. This is just very rough at this point, edges to be cleaned up then next will add steel inset windshield gutters and an inner structural
frame so it pops and slides forward over the hood like glass.

Re: DAY 1 >>> 89' BAT | ||

I think one of the reasons I never liked the Keaton Bat was because it really looked like it was made from flimsy plastic in every way (at least to me
anyways). Watching your car being made from solid steel to this point is really a nice change!
I assume the main body will be fiberglass? Even so, this should be one solid and sharp ride when done, you'll have to post a movie of the first test drive! Do you have a buyer for this car or are you just building it and then putting it up for sale? |

Out with the black and white and in with the color!
|
Located some new original 89 style gauges for the build.... 4" dia. 100mm white needle, black bezel mechanical speedo/tach etc for the almost the same
cost as autometer gauges...problem is after looking at them for awhile in an all black Batmobile , black interior and everything I think they'd be too
drab/boring.....original but drab so changed the plan...no drab for my 89 build!
Stay tuned.

Yea, put that '89 build away for the winter and get that '66 done!! can't wait to see how that new chassis works for ya, have you decided on a drive line? I know you were up in the air on that. seems like this is the year for '66's there seems to be quite a few being built, I just need to find the time to get my own body finished and join ya. should be done in a couple weeks, my chassis & drive train are ready and waiting. good luck with that new body and chassis hope it all works out for ya. I'm sure it will. |
