How much frame flex is expected? |
Lead | |
|
When I jack up a front corner on my bat my door won't open so I now have my bat at the frame shop to have an x member welded in to lesson the flex. They
also suggested beefing up the frame on both side front to back. My question is since a certain amount of flex is needed to prevent it being so rigid that metal
snaps. So I ask how stiff or beefed up should I go without having other problems?

Well I had an x member welded in the frame. Looks great, now I need to prime and paint.

Yea the chassis by itself is not as strong as you would think, when you cut the body away they really flex, An X member is always a good idea, really tightens up the whole thing, did you use a boxed Lincoln chassis and floor pan? |

I have the factory original boxed frame but did not use any floor pan, went with the Hines body that had the molded in floor.

Well that explains the flex, when you remove the factory floors and rocker panels, you remove what's left of the strength of the chassis. The chassis
itself is relatively weak without the floors, floor supports, and rocker panels, those are the structural parts that hold it all ridged. I would support that
chassis on the side rails too. you don't what a problem with sagging frame rails later on down the road. you know like on the older coupes that the rails
sag in the center, that would cause a world of problems for that fiberglass body, that X-member should fix the problem but there is no such thing as to much
chassis strength!! good luck.
