Re: Photos of the #3 from 2002-2003 | ||

A question: if you ended up being the owner of the #3 Barris replica as shown above, would you leave the car "as is" so to speak and not add the rear canopies and such to preserve it's integrity and history, or would you want to upgrade it and make it look like the #1 did during the series?
I was just wondering since in reality, only true die hard Batmobile buffs would know one car from the other. If an average fan noticed anything, they might just think you have a "crappy" replica that's missing stuff. I think I would be torn, I think history should be preserved and explained to people, but if I only had one Batmobile, i might want some improvements too (if it were this particular car or the #2 or #4) |

I would bring it back to its glory days of '67.

Nice pics Eric, I could definately agree to restore it to that historical point in time!
Chris W---note it has redline tires in those 1967 pics! |

Why would anyone bother to buy the #2, 3, 4 or 5 car if they can get a replica that is way more accurate to the #1 car for a lot less money?
The needs of the Captain must outweigh the needs of the crew.

I would much prefer a vintage Barris built replica from '66 to any current replica. It is not a knock to any current replica out there now, but these 3 cars have history and they are original.

I'd like one of each!!
I agree, the reason to get a #1-2-3-4 Barris car is because of it's historical significance, although I'd have to be beyond wealthy to justify that much money for even a historical car! I have a really nice replica Darth Vader helmet and would prefer an original helmet for the same reasons, but $$ prevents me from making George Lucas a reasonable offer! The #4 car is a good example though, that's one that you can restore and drive without sacrificing much if any of it's historical value, the #2 and #3 would likely make better static museum displays in my opinion, and if I ever get a Batmobile I wanna drive it!! |

That's what I like to hear! When I started building my car, people would ask me "What are you going to do with it when it's done?" DRIVE IT! People thought I was kidding. I had only seen them on the back of transports or behind ropes, with no electrical systems, headlights etc.
I wanted to see them on the road! It's great to see other people have decided it's not crazy to drive a batmobile! Nate |

Good to see some hi-res pics of the #3 car. When I saw it in 1992, digital cameras were not commonplace.
If a person would buy one of the three fiberglass Barris cars, it would be a tough call about how much to upgrade/modify it to look like the #1. Each one has a look and has a history that makes them immediately identifiable, yet at the same time it would drive any owner insane to know it isn't right. |

Was there a reason that the #3 was nt right?I mean the series was still filming,the #1 was still intact and yet there are so many details wrong with it,noteably that beacon and the rocket tubes.Always seemed strange to me.

My guess as to why: I believe many of the parts were fabricated, BUT some of them weren't. Rather they were obtained from various other sources. (Example: the beacons and flashing light.) Stuff like the arch had to be made, as they weren't available at the hardware store.
It's hard telling where some of the stuff came from. I'd guess they had yard sales back then, too. Who knows what the original beacon could've started out as... |

I agree totally with that, and also it just plain old takes a lot of time to build cars like this, especially if you are trying to "replicate" an exsisting vehicle.
So instead they likely just used what they had or what was readily available and cranked the cars out as fast as they could to meet the show circuit demand for more Batmobiles. ("Barris Industries" is a business after all, and Hollywood is all about "props" and keeping costs down) We all know most fans can't tell one car from another, and really back then, probably not too many people cared about the "details" as much as we do now in a society where we "collect everything". Back then, a big black car with red stripes and bats on the door was probably good enough. Would have been cool though if they HAD replicated the #1 closely on all of the Barris cars! |

As mentioned before, the #3 car originally had a clutch and a manual tranny in 1966. See black and white photo from 1967.
![]() Currently, the #3 car has an automatic tranny and it looks like they just removed the clutch and patched the hole.

I love a 4-spd clutch car....but I guess you never really saw the Batmobile's nose lifting and sinking as Batman power shifted through the gears so an automatic is probably the most appropriate tranny.
on the other hand, maybe the Batmobile DID have a clutch and that's why Robin never drove the car---you know most teens can't manage a clutch! Thanks for the new pics Eric, always fun to see the vintage vehicles then and now. What's up with that door bat and gap anyhow? |

Re: clutch | ||

I'm sorry. I don't agree. Only one of the Barris replicas was ever on screen. The rest are low quality replicas he made in order to make him more money at exhibitions. The hood doesn't even open correctly. And these cars have no history whatsoever.
I'd much rather have a decent replica by one of the makers here. In general, in props there's screen used (in our case that would be the #1 car), there's screen accurate (in our case a car build by the guys here) and there's the rest (and the #2, #3, #4 and #5 cars are part of the rest) The needs of the Captain must outweigh the needs of the crew.

Re: clutch | ||

does this car still have the 390 in it? i can swear i've seen a photo of the underhood that was taken at an auction and it was written that it had a 289 or a 302 in it in place of the 390.probally when it became an automatic.now maybe the gap in the fender may be an bad re install and they didn't re aline the flip hood right.now is it just me but even though it looks like the body needs work that the rear flare tip in doesn't seem to bad on this car? i still think it would be cool to restore this car to 1967 but i think with all the parts you could get from the builders you could get this to really acurate with a fold top dash etc. but that would be a looooootttt of cash.
